The need for a new transportation center at the suburban hub of the R5 line is an ongoing problem looking for a solution. Plans for the new Paoli Transportation Center - which include a new station, passenger amenities, office buildings, a bus station to serve transfer riders, a tax stand and an on-site parking garage - began in 1992. A number of factors have delayed the implementation of Paoli Transportation Center plans over the years. Now some are contending that a superstation should instead be built at either Downingtown or Thorndale, places that have room to build, have booming growth, and will need their own transportation center in 5 to 10 years. Supporters of the Paoli transportation hub contend that building a rail center in Downingtown or Coatesville would lead to further sprawl.
